Moggies or Mutt Cats
Moggies is the British slang for cats who are Mutts or what we in America call the domestics.
The world of pure blooded animals has expanded exponentially during my lifetime. When I was a child, there were a lot of cats and dogs around. I don’t recall one of them that was considered a purebred animal. There were Thoroughbred and Saddle Bred Horses but cats and dogs were just cats and dogs.
As the German Shepherd dog, the Cocker Spaniel dog the Siamese Cat and the Persian Cat gained popularity so did the clubs and registries for cats and dogs. It became fashionable to have animals with proven backgrounds, bloodlines and of course, Pedigrees. The more champion ancestry in those Pedigrees the better…bragging rights, you know.
Inevitably the argument became which is better, the purebred animal or the Heinz 57 variety? Then as many ‘backyard breeders’ and puppy mills proved greed, not love of the animals was their reason for being in business, some things began to become clear.
The first thing lovers of dogs began to see was the harm being done to Brachycephalic breeds like the Pekingese, the Pug and the English Bulldog. Cat lovers could see he same thing happening in the Persian breed. The problem was breeding for looks humans wanted in the dogs or cats with no thought at all to the health or well being of the animals. The result was dogs who cannot naturally deliver their young, cannot maintain their body temperature and are more susceptible to diseases and health problems that were rare or unknown in their ancestors.
Many dog and cat lovers came to be of the opinion it was better to have a Mutt than a purebred because of the health issue alone. Mutts were proving to be healthier and live longer than their purebred counterparts. You can find a Mutt with looks that mimic the best of the purebreds and they will usually carry the personality characteristics of the breed they look like. These reasons are why many people determined a Mutt was the best of both worlds.
This all culminated in Mutts being allowed as of last year into AKC agility, performance and rally competitions. They are not in the “beauty pageant” part of the dog show because that is a purebred dog competing against the ideal for his breed and of course, Mutts don’t have breed standards to compete against.
Now it looks as though cat lovers are finally looking for recognition of their Mutt Cats. Moggies is the British slang for cats who are Mutts or what we in America call domestic cats. The most common breed of cat in the United States is the Domestic cat, either Shorthair or Longhair. These are the cats you see at least one of in almost every American cat household and the cats you see numbers of around barns and farms.
From now on I think I will refer to the domestic cat as a Moggy. Perhaps giving them the name Moggies like Mutts was given to dogs will move the whole domestic cat group into a more recognized animal for our society. That might lead to the domestic cat being accepted as s part of American culture like the Mutt and that would make it harder to just kill them indiscriminately.
After all, that is what we are after, isn’t it?
Go Dark
Tomorrow on Jan. 18th 2012 our family sites will join thousands of sites across the United States. We will go dark in protest of the SOPA and PIPA bills that are pending before our congress and senate.
President Obama has already spoken out against these measures as have many Senators, Congressmen and members of the online community.
Our sites will join others in the online community by “going dark” from 8AM to 8PM PST.
I am sorry for any problems this may cause you, but we feel this an extremely important issue of our times and we would be remiss and indeed negligent if we did not stand up and go dark with our colleagues.
Our sites include:
Thank you for your support, patience and understanding. We look forward to bringing you news once again on Jan. 19th. We also look forward to not being censored in our thoughts, views and opinions. Please support open source software and information.
Cutest Cat Moments Video
In general, I think cats and kittens are right up there in the battle for the numero Uno of cute. I also think most sane people would agree with me on that point. I just have trouble deciding which is the cutest cat. Maybe the truth is at times, they are each the cutest cat and at times the best cat and at times the naughtiest cat, etc.
So, now that most of my family has recovered from a nasty bout of post Thanksgiving flu, I am going to post a video that is all cuteness, cats and kittens. I am really hoping the still ill among us will recover strength by viewing such sugary sweet cat and kitten behavior. But be warned you still sick ones, if this doesn’t work, I am prepared to make more chicken broth and break out more cute felines plus adding cute dogs and puppies to the brew.
Please get well because it is almost Christmas, guests are coming and I need you at full strength!
Here is the impossibly cute video of cats and kittens for your viewing pleasure.
I really can’t imagine not feeling better after seeing that, I really just can not.
About the New Forum
As you will be able to see, on the front page of fluffyfeet there are a lot of new pages like Profile, Friends, etc. In the future those pages will be part of our new Forum and Network. Unfortunately the entire new Forum is not yet complete. So naturally the pages don’t go anywhere for you.
I will continue to work on the new Forum and hope to have it up in the next few days.
As for the social network, when I tried to install that the entire site suffered a fatal error and crashed. I was up all night recovering the site to where it is now. I know I will get the courage to attempt installing the Network again, but at this moment I can’t say exactly when that will be.
In the meantime I will get the Forum up and running and try to add more to fluffyfeet as we go. I hope you like the look of the new fluffyfeet. I will be changing the header on a regular basis to make the site more interesting. please give me your suggestions about what you want to see featured in the header on the front page. Or send me cute pictures of your pet to feature. And don’t forget to comment on the articles posted here. It really helps me keep the site operating when I know you enjoy it.
Fluffyfeet Announcement
This blog will be going through changes over Sunday and Monday. I hope everything will be done by Tuesday. However, if it isn’t ready until Wednesday, please forgive my slowness.
Because this blog has an older Word Press theme, it is becoming increasingly balky. So I am changing the theme and some other things.
First, there will now be our own little fluffyfeet social network. You will be able to post your profile and interact just like you were on Facebook or a big social network like them.
Second, there will be a my pet dog page and a my pet cat page where you will be able to send in pictures and a brief description of your pet to be posted. There will also be other pet pages like horse, bird, ferret, rabbit, etc. Of course all of these posts will run past an editor before they are put up on the site itself.
Third, there will be an In Memorium page for pictures and brief stories about your animal friends who have gone over the rainbow bridge. Editors will also review these posts.
Fourth, I hope to have a forum for more interaction between readers and to encourage discussion about animals and pets.
I am working on some other exciting things for the future. For right now, I’ll be lucky to get all of this done over the next two or three days.
I sincerely hope the changes and new look will meet with readers approval.
It is hard to believe but Fluffyfeet has been active on the Internet for three years. Seems like it is time for some updates even if the old theme wasn’t giving me trouble (missed words from edit to publish, etc.).
You can count on us having the same quality and concern as always. And I hope we can get readers more interactive. With a way to communicate easily with both myself and other readers there won’t be a reason to be shy about discussing your pets, other animals, the environment and other things of interest.
Have a great Halloween. Keep close track of your pets and other animals with all the activity around and watch the amount of candy you eat!
