Her name is Nancy, she weighs two and a half pounds and she is a Chihuahua dog. She is also the world’s tiniest sheep herding dog.
Granted, the last thing you think about when you see the Chihuahua dog breed is ‘that’s a herding dog’. Even to herd Pygmy Goats would seem a challenge to this little breed because those diminutive goats are at least three times the size of a Chihuahua. However, no one told Nancy she wasn’t a herding dog and this tiniest of pet dog breeds can be quite stubborn. No one told this breed they weren’t as big or as tough as any dog on the block either, so they believe they are.
Most of us have the picture in our minds of Chihuahuas being pampered pet dogs. We see them in advertisements wearing cute doggy or riding along on the hip of a celebrity in a bag. They are not typically seen running through the countryside convincing sheep to go into their pens.
From our friends at Freekibble dot com;
Farmer Geoff Temple from Surrey has seen Nancy in action, and describes her as “amazing”. He explains: “I’ve been herding for 17 years and I’ve never seen a Chihuahua work sheep. I now train other people and their dogs and see about 15 people a week, and almost without exception they are all Border Collies. Nancy really is something special – she’s a fun-size sheep herder.”
The plucky pooch was brought into Battersea Dogs & Cats Home two years ago, when she was aged just three weeks old. Nancy had severe sarcoptic mange and had to be hand-reared by the animal charity’s Head of Canine Welfare Training Ali Taylor. Ali decided to adopt Nancy, and as the years passed, she frequently took the tiny dog on visits to farms.
Although Nancy may be unique in the sheep herding world, people who have shared their lives with the Chihuahua breed will tell you that they do things that are really amazing.
