A Sleeping Dormouse Snores

Remember reading about the dormouse at Alice’s un-birthday party in Wonderland? Or did you happen to see the dormouse at that party popping out of a teapot in the film?  Last question, did you ever wonder what the heck a dormouse was?

From Wikipedia;

Dormice are small for rodents, with a body length of between 6 and 19 cm (2.4 and 7.5 in), and weighing between 15 and 200 g (0.53 and 7.1 oz). They are generally mouse-like in appearance, but with furred, rather than scaly tails. They are largely but not exclusively arboreal animals, and are agile and well adapted to climbing. Most species are nocturnal. Dormice have an excellent sense of hearing, and signal each other with a variety of vocalisations.

<snip>

One of the most notable characteristics of those dormice that live in temperate zones is hibernation. Dormice can hibernate six months out of the year, or even longer if the weather remains sufficiently cool, sometimes waking for brief periods to eat food they had previously stored nearby. During the summer, they accumulate fat in their bodies, to nourish them through the hibernation period.

<snip>

Dormice breed once or maybe twice a year, producing litters with an average of four young after a gestation period of 21-32 days. They can live for as long as five years. The young are born hairless, and helpless, and their eyes do not open until about eighteen days after birth. They typically become sexually mature after the end of their first hibernation. Dormice live in small family groups, with home ranges that vary widely between species, and depending on the availability of food

If the Dormouse comes out of hibernation and finds there is a lack of food for his neighborhood or the weather is cold and wet, he will curl up into a ball and go to sleep. This is called torpor which is like a shorter hibernation.

Altogether the  Dormouse spends most of its life sleeping in either hibernation in winter or torpor in summer. They make nests under vegetation where they live and sleep the winter away then rouse in the nicer weather to have a family before back to sleep for them.

The Hazel Dormouse which is pictured above this post is the only Dormouse that is native to The British Isles and is the animal referred to most frequently when the British use the term Dormouse. The Hazel Dormouse is a European Protected Species protected in the UK by The Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Now to see a Dormouse do what it does best…sleep. Plus it turns out this particular Dormouse snores very loudly. He is resting in the hand of the zookeeper who found him and he doesn’t appear to have a care in the world.YouTube Preview Image

I can’t speak for anybody else, but that is about the cutest little Dormouse I have ever seen. Of course, in truth I have to say I haven’t seen that many. That doesn’t matter. he is still the cutest.

Wild Mountain Gorilla Encounter

What would you give to meet Wild Mountain Gorillas up close? I know I would be thrilled and probably very afraid if these incredible animals were actually grooming me. A Mountain Gorilla is a strong animal and if the Mountain Gorilla decides I am a threat, that is pretty much all she wrote.

Just imagine being so close to them that you could smell them and feel their fingers pull through your hair.  Watch this video and ask yourself would I or could I be as calm as this gentleman was?

Wow, just wow. I think he was thinking don’t touch back and definitely do NOT make eye contact because they will think it is a challenge.

No matter what you or I or the gentleman in the video would or did think, this would be the experience of a lifetime. It could even be life altering. What a great gift from these primates to this man.  All the rest of us can only imagine the thrill he felt at this encounter.

New Baby Polar Bear

There is nothing in the world cuter than babies. I mean baby anythings are cute. Baby animals, even naked little mice and rats are cute.

However, I think everyone would agree there are some babies that just take the prize when it comes to cuteness. Today we have a video of a baby Polar Bear. His name is Siku which means Sea Ice in Greenlandic and he was born last month at the Danish Scandinavian Wildlife Park.

The Polar Bear is an endangered species so each one born and raised to maturity is a victory for conservation and the environment. My fear however, is in a few years time we will see these majestic animals only in zoos and Wildlife Parks.

That would be a shame, but I can also envision saving and breeding endangered species so they may be returned to the wild once the planet is again able to sustain them. For that reason, I want to see endangered species raised in captivity as well as in the wild.

For now, let us just bask in the beauty and wonder of little Siku.

It won’t be long before this small bear will be out romping in the ice and snow. Then soon he will be too big to really interact with humans.

Here is wishing this tiny new arrival a long happy and fruitful life with many offspring.

Merry Christmas 2011!

I don't know, it just came and scooped me up. Really! Now, how do I get out?

I know Christmas isn’t until Sunday, but I saw these oh sooo cute!  videos and just had to bring them to fluffy feet readers a bit early.

You all know I can’t get enough of cute animal pictures and videos and a sweet girl I know in California named Kathleen who has a beautiful pet cat named Benna loves cute cat videos and pictures too.

This post is a Christmas treat as well as a shout out to Kathleen, Benna, Grant,Molly and all the other wonderful fluffy feet family members. I know there are lots of boys and girls out there who have cats, dogs or other pets they love.  This post is a shout out to all of them too.

I hope these videos are new to you. But if they are not, I’m sure you will be happy to see them again.

First up is a kitten who tries to catch the air coming out of a fan. She knows something is ruffling her hair but she isn’t sure what it is.  She knows it is coming out of that pesky fan though and she intends to catch it. When she gets older she will probably think the fan and the laser pointer are related because the prey coming from them always escapes.

Next we will see a shaded golden Persian kitten named Cricket who is just being a normal kitten and amusing herself. She is so cute and fluffy though that you just want to pick her up and hug her. I guarantee after watching this video, you will want a Cricket of your very own.

Let it be the Merriest Christmas Ever!

Check back after Christmas Day, there will be some great things coming! Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays.

Young Orca Tries to Communicate

Orcas breaching. Poetry in motion, don't you think?

This post is cross posted here with permission from our sister site bleeding earth. I hope you will enjoy it. I found this young Orca to be truly amazing.

Lots of older people like me begin to think they have seen it all and know the basic fundamentals of everything. That is why we become ‘stuck in our ways.’ That means we don’t adapt and accept new things.

The problem with getting ‘stuck in our ways’ is we miss out on a lot of things life has to offer and the wonders that are still out there to discover.  It is like the mind is not only closed, it has rusted shut and that is sad.

My parents taught me at a very young age to never think in generalities. Plus my mother gave birth to me in the ‘Show Me’ State of Missouri. Maybe that guaranteed I would be curious about the things around me throughout my life.

However, I tend to think another thing also made me understand to expect the unexpected. That thing was being around, living with, observing, learning about and loving animals of all kinds. Because once you have been around a various group of animals you will find they do truly amazing things and you can never really predict what is coming next.

I had the good fortune of living on a beach in Southern California for twenty plus years. Those years gave me ample time to observe both Dolphins and Whales. I saw fewer whales of course, but during their normal migration they were plentiful.  There is even a group of the California Gray Whales that stays off the coast Of California year round. Needless to say, I became entranced with whales and Dolphins.

Anyway to get to today’s video. This video is of a young Orca or Killer Whale doing something truly unusual and in my view, spectacular.

Before we get to the video, let’s learn a bit about this animal. First off,  Orcas are not  whales, they are Dolphins.

From Wikipedia;

The killer whale (Orcinus orca), commonly referred to as the orca, and less commonly as the blackfish, is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family. Killer whales are found in all oceans, from the frigid Arctic andAntarctic regions to tropical seas. Killer whales as a species have a diverse diet, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey. Some feed exclusively on fish, while others hunt marine mammals such as sea lionssealswalruses and even largewhales. Killer whales are regarded as apex predators, lacking natural predators and preying on even large sharks.

The video is a young Orca named Luna. He lost his family and began trying o communicate with people In many different ways. The video shows one of the more novel of his attempts to communicate.  YouTube Preview Image

Anyone who says animals of all kinds don’t talk is just crazy. They talk in a language we don’t understand, but they do talk. They talk to each other and to their young, they have regional dialects and accents and they even have certain ‘words or phrases’ that seem to be specific to one pod or family.

Watching Luna trying to talk to humans by imitating the boat’s motor is just mind-blowing. This young Orca was trying to make friends and receive guidance. It is likely he was very lonely after the loss of his family. I find that very sad.

Imagine what we could learn about our planet and particularly its oceans if we could learn to communicate with other mammals. I bet one of the first things we would learn is we are the ones ruining the environment for all the rest and we aren’t as smart or different as we think we are.

Be sure to introduce any older people you know who are ‘stuck in their ways’ to things like the wonder of the Orca. Perhaps they will see losing your curiosity about life leaves you without knowledge of some of the best parts of the life you share with the rest of the world.

How sad is it that this poor animal cannot communicate with humans? I hope someday whales, dolphins and other animals will be able to talk to us. Lets learn their languages and have conversations, okay?
