Oakland Zoo Adopts Tigers

Beautiful, dangerous and mystical tiger.

This article is cross posted here from our sister site Bleeding Earth which is about the environment.  I hope you enjoy it.

Where would you rather see a tiger live?

  1. In a cage in someones personal animal collection
  2. As a roadside or freak show attraction
  3. In a circus or carnival
  4. In an accredited zoo

I don’t like to see tigers or other wild animals penned up in any way, because I sincerely think they should live their lives in freedom and in their native habitat.

However, in our modern world  it is a sad but true fact tigers and other big cats are going extinct in the wild.  In fact, there are more tigers in the United States than there are in the wild. Over 8,000 tigers are in this country and only a few of them live at accredited zoos.  The rest are mainly trapped in small cages in backyards because someone bought a cute tiger cub and I guess they were too stupid to realize it would grow up to be one of the world’s top predators.

Many zoos don’t want to take the ‘pet’ tigers because they are mutts.  They are not pure Bengal Tiger, Sumatran Tiger or Siberian Tiger.  So they are not endangered and zoos consider them unsuitable for breeding.

So these mutt tigers spend their lives in cramped cages often without adequate food or water. They are often abused and teased and definitely die before their time.

From SFgate:

“There’s no way we could take just one,” said Erica Calcagno, an Oakland zookeeper who made the trek to Brownsville, Texas, where the tigers – all sisters – had been rescued from a roadside freak show.

“They’re gorgeous. Even when they’re sleeping they’re gorgeous. And we thought their story was an important one for us to tell.”

So far, the frolicsome felines are the party girls of the zoo. On Tuesday the 6-year-old sisters chased each other through the grass, splashed in the pool and rolled on a wooden platform sprayed with their favorite scent, Calvin Klein’s Obsession.

But beyond entertaining visitors, zoo staff hopes the tigers serve a broader purpose: to educate the public about tiger mills.

The sisters’ elderly tiger compatriot is also a rescue. She came to the zoo about 10 years ago from a circus. In fact, many of the animals at the Oakland Zoo are rescued from some less-than-ideal situation, said Colleen Kinzley, director of animal care, conservation and research.

“We feel this is such a critical issue,” she said. “We can’t come close to helping all the animals, but maybe we can sway public opinion a little bit.”

It is heart breaking to think of the lives the animals who are not rescued live.  However, The Oakland Zoo deserves a lot of credit for what they are doing. The faster we make all people aware of the plight of these big cats and other animals, the better.

We need the top predators in a wild environment to keep the ecosystem in balance. We need these animals, perhaps more than they need us.  We need to have a world where animals and humans can live together.

As much as we may need these things, climate change, chemicals and pollution are making it impossible to live on the earth.  The sooner we recognize this the better.  Let’s just hope we aren’t to late in getting the naysayers to come around. If we are, it may not be only the big cats that will disappear.  Humans will be going right along with them.

Sumatran Tiger Cubs Video

Tigers are severely endangered throughout the world. Some subspecies like the Bengal Tiger and the Sumatran Tiger are at more risk than others because of encroachment onto the forests they inhabit.  Their environment is being lost at an incredible rate.

That is why animal advocates and lovers everywhere are so gladdened to see healthy cubs from these species.  Their chances are not good without the help of humans to stop the ruination of heir homes.  But on the other hand, the more healthy cubs there are, the better the chance to relocate them or as a last resort put them in a captive breeding program to save the species.

As endangered as these magnificent big cats are, in my view whatever it takes to save them is what has to be done.  I don’t like the idea of captive breeding, but if it is the only way..,well then, okay, anything to save them.  Life in a world without these beautiful animals is too depressing to even contemplate.

The World Wildlife Fund is working diligently to help many endangered species, including tigers.  They put out a trap camera in an area Sumatran tigers are known to inhabit.  The results this one camera yielded are nothing short of amazing.  Here is the blurb about the video below.

From WWF;

WWF camera traps recorded 12 tigers in just two months in the central Sumatran landscape of Bukit Tigapuluh, including the mothers and cubs in this video. The forests where these tigers live face the looming threat of being cleared by the pulp and paper industry.

Now please enjoy this truly beautiful video.

Don’t you just love he part where the cubs are playing with the huge dry leaves. It is as if the one cub says “All the leaves r mine!”

I also like to see them so close rubbing and marking the camera. If you have a cat at home, I am sure you recognized that particular gesture.

All in all, these are very beautiful Sumatran tiger cubs and they look so healthy and happy. It is up to us as humans to make sure their forest home remains a safe haven for them.

Below as a special Saturday bonus.  Kitten tails!

Help Save Louisiana Tiger

Tigers are very, very endangered.  Their loss of habitat and changes to their environment have combined with illegal poaching to drag their numbers almost beyond the tipping point to extinction.  In fact, it is believed their are more tigers in the United States who are in captivity than there are remaining in the wild.

That is horrendous.  I don’t think tigers or other big cats for that matter, should be kept as pets or as specimens.  Zoos are not really good places for tigers and big cats either.  Although in the case of zoos like the San Diego Wild Animal Park where the animals roam free and the people are contained as they drive through to observe them, I am more accepting.

However, in no way can I accept keeping a wild tiger as a roadside attraction in order to drum up business. That brings us to the case of a tiger named Tony.  He lives in a cage along a highway in Louisiana.  There is nothing in that cage to occupy his time or for him to just look at to stimulate his mind.  There is no pool big enough for him to  cool himself during the hot and very humid Louisiana summers.

To my mind this is abuse and cruelty in its truest form.  Tony’s locked cage with no mental or physical stimulation has robbed this tiger of ten years of his life and not surprisingly, damaged his health.  It is beyond time that arrangements are made for this big cat to be taken to a sanctuary where he can be treated and nursed back to health.  Then he can then live out his life with people who understand big cats and give them great environments and room to really live as close to wild as can be achieved.

From Care 2 Petition Site;

The years in the truck stop enclosure are hard on Tony veterinary experts believe that he needs to be relocated and properly cared for in order to be healthy and happy. Demand that Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries stand up for Tony the Tiger and turn him over to an organization that could give him the environment he needs.

Click below and follow the instructions to add your name to Tony’s cause.  Thank you for everything you do for animals and the environment.

Here is a kitty fist bump for you!

Tiger Gets Hip Transplant

An eight year old Malaysian Tiger named Girl has become the first ever Tiger to receive a new hip by transplant.  The poor cat had been showing signs of arthritis in the hip that has now been replaced.  I can tell you arthritis is painful and I can’t imagine how it would feel to lay on cement instead of an orthopedic bed while suffering from it.

From the New York Daily News;

“Malayan tigers are one of the world’s most endangered species, with only around 500 estimated to be living in the wild,” Leipzig University said in a statement. “This was another reason to operate on Girl.”

Medical officials told the Deutsche Welle newspaper that the operation ended well, but Girl isn’t out of the woods yet. The next six months will be vital for the tiger, doctors said.

“She’s resting,” head doctor Peter Böttcher told the German paper, “and doing as well as any tiger could be after such a serious operation … We are happy.”

The first-of-its-kind surgery wasn’t without complications. During the operation, Girl’s heart came close to stopping, according to the AFP, but she was saved by an alert anesthetist.

With the watchfulness of her caretakers snd the good medical care she is receiving, it seems Girl has a really good outlook for full recovery.

In my estimation this is a small thing to do to keep one of these precious endangered Tigers around.  All of the big cats are facing possible extinction and the longer we can keep them, the better.  Perhaps we can buy enough time to figure out a way to help their particular cat species survive.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if someday these beautiful animals were not threatened in their environment and they could return to the wild?

Protect Tigers by Not Buying

Every year thousands of people go on vacation to places that have wild animals roaming free.  I can understand that because we would all like to see the native habitat of our favorite big cats, wild dogs, elephants, etc.  But before you travel please learn a few things to help save the native animals in the area where you are going.

It is unfortunate but true that tigers are endangered in the wild.  A lot of the problem for these beautiful cats comes from poaching.  Many of the poached tigers are cut up and sold for souvenirs to tourists.  It is a big a business for the poachers and they will not stop until people stop buying their ill gotten product.  As long as there is a market for these goods, tigers and other endangered animals will be killed to meet the demand.

So if you are traveling on holiday or even if you are staying home, there are some things you should know that will help stop the trafficking in products made from the bodies and parts of endangered species and other wildlife.  In my opinion no wildlife should have to die just so I can have a knick knack or souvenir to set on a shelf in my home.

Sometimes though, it isn’t so obvious just what you are buying.  So be sure you ask and try to buy things like baskets or local crafts that aren’t made from animal skin or parts.  It may not seem like you are doing a lot, but if you multiply your efforts by the millions of other tourists who will do the same, it makes a huge difference.

The main thing to do is think before you buy and remember you will be saving lives by not buying items made from animals bodies.  If it contains fur, feathers, claws, talons, quills, coral. shells or any other animal part pass it by and find something else to take home.  If we are all proactive we can save a lot of wildlife and prevent innocent animals of all kinds from suffering needlessly.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare has a pledge you can sign saying you will not buy animal souvenirs or gifts.

Thank you for all you do for animals and the environment.
