Cat Survives Gas Chamber Twice
Sometimes I feel sorry for myself. Just now I was sad for me because my family is down with a terrible flu. We have been sick since my birthday which was New Years Day.
To make a long story short, I thought I deserved to feel sorry for myself……that is, until I read about a plucky little cat who refused to die when people tried to execute her in a gas chamber.
From MSNBC;
Officials at West Valley City’s animal shelter in Utah say the cat named Andrea hadn’t been adopted for 30 days when shelter officials tried to put her to death in October. She survived, so they gassed her again.
Shelter officials detected no vital signs and presumed she was dead after the second try, so they put her in a plastic bag in a cooler. But when they checked the bag, they saw she had vomited on herself and had hypothermia but was alive.
The shelter then decided to stop trying to kill her.
“It was just one of those things where they thought this cat obviously really wants to live,” West Valley City spokesman Aaron Crim told the Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/ylvSDw ). “Let’s give it a chance to find a permanent home.”
The newspaper reports the cat has since been adopted and shelter officials are investigating why the gassing failed.
I absolutely hate the idea that animals must go through so much just to prove they have a right to live. In my opinion, this cat should not have been put in the gas chamber the first time, let alone the second go round. We simply must get to the place where no-kill shelters the rule rather than the exception in this country.
I know sometimes an animal is too sick or too hurt to save and I understand that. What I can’t understand is murdering cats, dogs and other animals just because we humans decide there are too many of them or some politician gets a bug up their big butt and decides to thin out the pet population.
Wouldn’t the money spent on murdering these innocent animals be better spent on an intelligent spay/neuter campaign and laws? If we significantly reduce the number of “unwanted” puppies, kittens and other pets, it will be a whole lot easier to find forever homes for the ones that are here. Then maybe we can junk the gas chamber thing altogether and have only no kill shelters for the few animals that get lost or have other bad luck which puts them on the street.
I am smart enough to know that most people won’t be listening to what I have to say about this subject. That doesn’t mean I am going to shut up about it. It is the right thing to do and until my last breath I will be speaking out in favor of no kill animal shelters and rescues. I will speak for those who do not speak human.

Pet Adoption Christmas Window
The Department Store Macy’s is famous for their Christmas window decorations. I’m sure many of us have delighted at the wonder of the beautiful Christmas scenes.
This year as they have for the past six years the SPCA and the Macy’s store in San Francisco have come together to fill their Christmas windows with pets who are up for adoption. Together the partnership has found homes for over 2,000 animals and raised over $320,000.00.
Imagine being a child going up to the Christmas display window, pressing your face tight to the glass so you will be sure to see it all and then a puppy or kitten scampers over to gaze at you through the glass. What a wonderful surprise!
From our friends at Care2;
As the production supervisor for Macy’s Visual Windows puts it in the video below: “It’s really one of the nicest things that we do.”
The Care2 link has a video you can watch too.
This is such a great idea. I wish more retailers would do this and not only at the holidays. I really think a lot of great pets could find forever homes if they were just out there to be seen by animal lovers as they go about errands and do their shopping.
We need to put pet adoption right out there so people don’t get so busy with other things they forget about it. Pet adoption should be the best way to acquire an animal as a pet.
When we showcase adoptable animals, invariably almost all of them find homes. Pet adoption just needs to be put right up in people’s faces so they do it. We need to make it popular and what all the in people do. That way, people will follow and do the right thing. Until we no longer murder so many cats, kittens, dogs and puppies we have to go on the offensive.
Puppies are Easier than Children
In my view it is a lot easier to raise a puppy, no matter the breed or non-breed, than it is to have a child. I have always felt this to be the case.
I have also come to believe it is the reason couples who choose not to have children become so close to their pets. These people spend a fraction of the time they would on a human baby and devote it entirely to the animal. This in turn opens their hearts and minds to the possibilities and personalities in their pets.
If you are not convinced that puppies are easier to raise than a human child, I ran across an article I would like to point you to. It has nine reasons why puppies are easier to raise and I will list them for you but you will have to go to the article to read the writer’s argument behind the reasons. I think most of them are self-explanatory.
- Potty training takes several weeks as opposed to several years.
- Puppies are always happy to see you and are never in a grouchy mood.
- You never have to worry where puppies are on Friday at Midnight.
- Puppies can sleep in your bedroom or bed without you worrying if they will be permanently scarred.
- You can cut their hair any way you want.
- Dogs don’t have babies they leave with you to be raised and you decide when and if they become parents.
- You don’t have to be a positive role model
- They don’t have to be watched 24/7.
- Dogs never ask to borrow your car.
You can read the reasoning behind these points at Care2 Green Living.
I would add to this list you don’t have to pay for their very expensive college education, puppies don’t borrow your clothes and puberty is far easier and shorter with a dog.
Yes, to my mind puppies are just a lot easier than human babies. So are kittens for that matter, or gerbils or hamsters or…….well, you get the idea.
Cute Puppy Yells for Elmo
Lets just face facts right up front and get it out of the way. Puppies are cute. Even the floppiest, wrinkled puppy is a cute puppy. In fact, all puppies are cute puppies.
Now that we have that settled, lets talk about the puppy in the video below. Yeah, he’s a cute puppy, but then that is a given. He also is a loud puppy. It also sounds as though he is calling out for Elmo!
That’s right….Elmo. You listen to him and see what you hear.
I don’t know if it is a person named Elmo or the Muppet character this cute puppy is screaming for, but I do know that it sounds to me as if he is calling for Elmo and I think Elmo better come and get him before he breaks all the glass in the neighborhood with his screech!
Animals always do things to amaze us.
Funny Puppy
The puppy in the video below is a shih-tzu/Terrier mix. Since the mom is a pure bred Shih-Tzu and the father is Shih-tzu/Terrier, these puppies are about three-quarters pure bred. I am not saying pure bred is better, because I do not necessarily believe that. What I am trying to tell you is because these puppies have three-quarters pure bred genetics, they are going to have far more Shih-tzu characteristics than that of the one-quarter Terrier.
They are beautiful little dogs and the bonus is the featured puppy has just recently learned to bark and he is practicing getting it just the way he wants while he is also trying to tempt his puppy friend to come out and play. Because this sweet little dog wants to play so badly, this video is cute as it can be.
Any children reading this, please understand when a dog does a ‘play bow’ it means they want some attention and want to interact and play with you. You can identify this move by the dogs going down on their front legs while leaving their rearend in the air, usually with the tail wagging. Many times they also will lift and slap down their front paws. This is dog language for ‘come on let’s do something.’
I hope you enjoy the video and the wonderfully engaging puppies.
Animals are so cute, aren’t they? There is something so very engaging about a puppy. They can charm you into just about anything.
