New Baby Polar Bear

There is nothing in the world cuter than babies. I mean baby anythings are cute. Baby animals, even naked little mice and rats are cute.

However, I think everyone would agree there are some babies that just take the prize when it comes to cuteness. Today we have a video of a baby Polar Bear. His name is Siku which means Sea Ice in Greenlandic and he was born last month at the Danish Scandinavian Wildlife Park.

The Polar Bear is an endangered species so each one born and raised to maturity is a victory for conservation and the environment. My fear however, is in a few years time we will see these majestic animals only in zoos and Wildlife Parks.

That would be a shame, but I can also envision saving and breeding endangered species so they may be returned to the wild once the planet is again able to sustain them. For that reason, I want to see endangered species raised in captivity as well as in the wild.

For now, let us just bask in the beauty and wonder of little Siku.

It won’t be long before this small bear will be out romping in the ice and snow. Then soon he will be too big to really interact with humans.

Here is wishing this tiny new arrival a long happy and fruitful life with many offspring.

A Special Fluffy Feet Surprise

There is so much beauty in the natural world. We must try our best to save it for all the people and other animals who come after us.

Fluffy Feet was started as a blog to help find forever homes for dogs, cats and other animals.  Its purpose was also to educate about the different breeds and types of domestic pets as well as to show you fun videos and beautiful animal pictures.

Along the way, my love for the outdoors, nature and all things animal began to get in the way of the Fluffy Feet purpose.  I found more and more posts were going to the environment and endangered wild species.  This was thwarting the original purpose of the site plus making me feel inadequate for losing Fluffy Feet’s original goal.

After much thought I decided to break this site in half.  So I opened another site.  It is called Bleeding Earth and concentrates on the environment and actions you can take to help.  There will also be tips on wild places to visit and things to do to make your life greener and reduce your carbon footprint.  Fluffy Feet will again concentrate on pets and rescue along with causes to sign on to and stories about domestic animals.

There will of course be some overlapping articles that will be posted on both sites.  However, as the new site gains momentum and posts, the overlap will decline.  I will not and cannot in good conscience quit posting about oceans, whales, polar bears, big cats, wolves and the environment.  It is just that now these subjects as well as posts about pollution, endangered species, energy and other environmental problems will be located at Bleeding Earth.

I believe our environmental problem is the most pressing issue of out times.  I will try in my small way to alert people to the problems and help find solutions.

I would really like all the readers of the Fluffy Feet site to check out Bleeding Earth.  That is, as long as you won’t be too harsh in your judgment just yet.  remember the site is really still under construction and it will grow quickly now that posts are going up.

Thank you for all you do for animals and the environment and a special thanks for your readership.  Please know I appreciate each and every one of you.

I am also putting a link on the front page for your convenience.

Top 10 Most Endangered Species

At the end of last year the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) put out their list of the ten animal species to watch in 2010.  We are now half way through the year and it seems we still have members of these species but are we doing enough?

Sadly, the Giant Panda, Tiger and Polar Bear lead the list.  Here is the top ten in order of their  WWF placement;

  1. Giant Panda
  2. Tiger
  3. Polar Bear
  4. Pacific Walrus
  5. Magellanic Penguin
  6. Leatherback Turtle
  7. Mountain Gorilla
  8. Monarch Butterfly
  9. Javan Rhinoceros
  10. Bluefin Tuna

The fate of all of these species  is questionable.  The Giant Panda seems to be on the road to recovery because the government of China is backing the setting aside of habitat for them and financing the studies that have led to so many baby Giant Pandas being born.    China has recognized the fact that the Giant Panda is a national resource and a symbol of their country all over the world.  The Giant Panda is also the symbol of the WWF.

Mountain Gorillas are also benefiting from some in the government of their country seeing the benefit in saving the animal.  However, the habitat of this gorilla crosses borders.  War and poaching has taken a horrible toll on this species.

We all know about the plight of big cats with the Tiger being in the most trouble at this time.  People around the world are banding together to save the few remaining representatives of the Tiger and we can only hope that we will be successful.

The Polar Bear is also receiving the benefit of heightened awareness to their plight.  But the moratorium on Arctic drilling for oil may not hold for a long enough time to truly put this species on the road to recovery.  Oil Drilling is not the only danger to these bears.  Climate change with its melting ice also poses a serious danger to them from starvation.

Hopefully, more governments and their citizens will become enlightened about the species that are seriously endangered and take measures to save them.  All of these animals are not only national, but world treasures.  We must do everything in our power to preserve the environment for them as well as us.

You can read about each of these endangered species and the steps that are being taken to save them here.  Take the time to read about them and if you can help in any way, please do so.  Flyffyfeet will continue to post alerts to petitions and other actions you can take to help.

Great News for Polar Bears

I want to thank  everyone who stood up for the endangered Polar Bear.  All those signatures, letters, emails and phone calls have done the trick for these big white bears—at least for now.

On Thursday May 27th, President Obama and his Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced a halt to drilling in the Arctic.  But you have to understand this is a moratorium on drilling and could be reversed in the future.

From Defenders of Wildlife:

Today, your hard work paid off, as President Obama and Interior Secretary Salazar acknowledged the very serious threat that drilling activities pose to the sensitive ecosystems that sustain the Chukchi’s polar bears, bowhead whales and other wildlife.

Defenders’ senior marine policy advisor Richard Charter put it best in a statement to the press earlier today:

“President Obama and Interior Secretary Salazar should be commended for suspending Shell’s plans to drill in the Arctic Ocean this summer. The Arctic environment absolutely could not stand an oil spill like the one we’re now seeing in the Gulf of Mexico — any spill, in fact, would have devastating effects on Arctic wildlife, and it’s clear that we couldn’t clean it up.

Today’s announcement by the Obama administration is a HUGE victory in our fight to prevent the next offshore oil disaster, but make no mistake: our fight is from over.

Defenders of Wildlife will continue to push for a broader, more permanent ban on dangerous offshore drilling activities that threaten our wildlife. We will continue our on-the-ground work to save the lives of sea turtles and other wildlife threatened by the Gulf offshore oil disaster.

And we will keep fighting to ensure accountability in government agencies charged with overseeing drilling permits and hold BP accountable for the catastrophic ecological damage that their negligence has caused in the Gulf of Mexico and beyond.

Read the rest of their statement here.

Rest assured there will be plenty to keep environmental and animal activists busy.  But please take a little bit of time to appreciate these magnificent animals and to pat yourselves on the back for a job well done.

Thank you for all you do for animals and the environment.  I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

May all the Arctic animals swim in clean water forever.

Its The Weekend! Animal Style

While I was watching the video I already posted today, I ran across this.  It is penguins again.  This time with a lazy Polar Bear.

What funny birds and what beautiful bears. Seriously , could anything be more fun than just observing our animal friends as they unabashedly go about enjoying life and their environment?  We could really learn a lot from them, if only we would listen and watch.

I have to admit this closely mirrors my feelings about weekends and going back to work come Monday.
