Cat Survives Gas Chamber Twice
Sometimes I feel sorry for myself. Just now I was sad for me because my family is down with a terrible flu. We have been sick since my birthday which was New Years Day.
To make a long story short, I thought I deserved to feel sorry for myself……that is, until I read about a plucky little cat who refused to die when people tried to execute her in a gas chamber.
From MSNBC;
Officials at West Valley City’s animal shelter in Utah say the cat named Andrea hadn’t been adopted for 30 days when shelter officials tried to put her to death in October. She survived, so they gassed her again.
Shelter officials detected no vital signs and presumed she was dead after the second try, so they put her in a plastic bag in a cooler. But when they checked the bag, they saw she had vomited on herself and had hypothermia but was alive.
The shelter then decided to stop trying to kill her.
“It was just one of those things where they thought this cat obviously really wants to live,” West Valley City spokesman Aaron Crim told the Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/ylvSDw ). “Let’s give it a chance to find a permanent home.”
The newspaper reports the cat has since been adopted and shelter officials are investigating why the gassing failed.
I absolutely hate the idea that animals must go through so much just to prove they have a right to live. In my opinion, this cat should not have been put in the gas chamber the first time, let alone the second go round. We simply must get to the place where no-kill shelters the rule rather than the exception in this country.
I know sometimes an animal is too sick or too hurt to save and I understand that. What I can’t understand is murdering cats, dogs and other animals just because we humans decide there are too many of them or some politician gets a bug up their big butt and decides to thin out the pet population.
Wouldn’t the money spent on murdering these innocent animals be better spent on an intelligent spay/neuter campaign and laws? If we significantly reduce the number of “unwanted” puppies, kittens and other pets, it will be a whole lot easier to find forever homes for the ones that are here. Then maybe we can junk the gas chamber thing altogether and have only no kill shelters for the few animals that get lost or have other bad luck which puts them on the street.
I am smart enough to know that most people won’t be listening to what I have to say about this subject. That doesn’t mean I am going to shut up about it. It is the right thing to do and until my last breath I will be speaking out in favor of no kill animal shelters and rescues. I will speak for those who do not speak human.

Pet Adoption Christmas Window
The Department Store Macy’s is famous for their Christmas window decorations. I’m sure many of us have delighted at the wonder of the beautiful Christmas scenes.
This year as they have for the past six years the SPCA and the Macy’s store in San Francisco have come together to fill their Christmas windows with pets who are up for adoption. Together the partnership has found homes for over 2,000 animals and raised over $320,000.00.
Imagine being a child going up to the Christmas display window, pressing your face tight to the glass so you will be sure to see it all and then a puppy or kitten scampers over to gaze at you through the glass. What a wonderful surprise!
From our friends at Care2;
As the production supervisor for Macy’s Visual Windows puts it in the video below: “It’s really one of the nicest things that we do.”
The Care2 link has a video you can watch too.
This is such a great idea. I wish more retailers would do this and not only at the holidays. I really think a lot of great pets could find forever homes if they were just out there to be seen by animal lovers as they go about errands and do their shopping.
We need to put pet adoption right out there so people don’t get so busy with other things they forget about it. Pet adoption should be the best way to acquire an animal as a pet.
When we showcase adoptable animals, invariably almost all of them find homes. Pet adoption just needs to be put right up in people’s faces so they do it. We need to make it popular and what all the in people do. That way, people will follow and do the right thing. Until we no longer murder so many cats, kittens, dogs and puppies we have to go on the offensive.
Dog and Cat React Irrationally
A dog and cat can react very differently to everyday situations. But this dog and cat react in truly bizarre fashion to what would have to be considered mundane happenings. Although there is no threat, both the dog and cat react as though that just might not be the case.
Animals can have phobias and act irrationally just like humans. The difference is we can’t get the dog or cat to lie on a couch to tell us what exactly it is that drives them over the edge.
To prove this point today we have a video of a dog who is afraid of a magazine photo of Julia Roberts and a cat who reacts very strangely to a visit by his human friend’s daughter.
Perhaps these animals are responding to a color or a scent they do not like. Or perhaps some long repressed puppy or kitten memory suddenly surfaces. I must admit I have no idea why this cat and dog react the way they do to these different situations. But I also must say it is comical to watch and part of the mystery of our pets lives and personalities. We will watch as a dog and cat react very differently than you would expect. See what you think of the way the dog and cat react.
First let’s watch the kitty who reacts by saying no over and over when he sees the daughter of a friend of his human guardian. It is funny. However, I can tell you by the cat’s body language he sees nothing humorous at all in the situation.

Could you tell the cat was truly upset? Look at the set of his ears and the stance of his body. Also note the fluffed out hair, arched back and the dilated pupils of his eyes. Unless you know a particular cat really well, it is best not to approach them if they are in this position. You stand a really good chance of getting bitten or scratched if you do. Yes, I am telling you this from experience.
Now let’s look at the strange reaction of a dog to a picture in a magazine.

Again you can tell by the dog’s body language, he is not happy at all with what he sees. He obviously wants to put as much distance as possible between himself and the perceived threat. I do wonder if it is a scent he is reacting to because many of these magazine ads have a scented page to match the smell of the item being advertised. Or perhaps this dog really doesn’t like the look of Julia Roberts.
I don’t know the answers to these strange animal behaviors. I do think it is interesting and I wish I did understand the reasons. For today, I will settle with offering the videos for your opinions.
Kitten and Cigarette Video
Smoking is a very nasty and dangerous habit. It affects you and those around you including your pets.
If you do not smoke, please don’t start. If you do smoke, please do your utmost to quit. Believe me, from first hand experience I know it is hard, but it is worth it for both you and your family, including your animal family.
That brings us to this really funny video of a kitten and cigarette. The kitten doesn’t want to give up the new ‘toy’ he has discovered. His human guardians know best and take the cigarette from him.
The kitten and cigarette video is a good illustration of how hard it is to give up cigarettes. I hope you enjoy it.
I hope you will encourage the people and pets you know to quit smoking. Just remember, it might be a little harder with the cats.
Don’t you just love the way the kitten and cigarette video shows the kitten turning into a mountain lion when the chips are down and he has to give up the cigarette?
A little bonus for all of you.
The Snowshoe Cat- a Rare Cat Breed
The Snowshoe cat is a rare and beautiful breed. Not only are these cats lovely to just look at, they have personalities that are also lovely to live with.
They are sweet-tempered, mellow and affectionate. This breed shows great devotion and love for their human guardians. The intense devotion accounts for one of the few drawbacks to having a Snowshoe Cat as a pet. That is the fact they do not like to be left for long periods by themselves. Of course, you can cure the problem by having another cat as a companion for your beautiful Snowshoe.
This cat is also very intelligent. Snowshoe cats have been known to learn how to open doors and they like to play fetch. The Snowshoe cat is also known for its affection for water, especially running water. The breed is active without being easily agitated. They love to play but are also happy being petted and pampered.
This breed of cats originated in the 1960′s when a Philadelphia Siamese cat breeder’s cat gave birth to three kittens with distinctive white feet. This breeder then set out to duplicate the rare cats that were then called Silver Laces.
The Siamese with the silver laces feet were crossed with American Shorthair bi-colors and other cats, but the distinctive markings proved difficult at best to reproduce.
Other breeders took over when the original breeder retired and continued the pursuit of the perfect Snowshoe and getting the breed fully recognized by various cat associations.
Although it has been fifty years, the Snowshoe is still a very rare cat. Because the cat’s cot markings are based on recessive , co-dominant and variably expressed genes, it is difficult at best to predict the features of offspring.
Being a cross between the American Shorthair and the Siamese which originated in Philadelphia, this cat is a true American original. They have vivid blue eyes, pointed coat and white markings on their legs and feet.
Grooming is not a major problem for these robust cats because their coats change with the seasons. They are medium to large cats with full-grown males weighing between eight and sixteen pounds.
Because these cats are so smart, love their family, get along well with other pets, are great with children and prefer to be indoor cats they seem to be the perfect family pet.
As stated earlier, the Snowshoe cat doesn’t like to spend long periods alone. The only other possible drawback to these cats is that they can be quite vocal and will have their opinion heard.
The Snowshoe cat might be the best pet for you if you can find room for two and learn to talk to them. Not too great a price to live with such beauty and gentle companionship, is it?
