Moggies or Mutt Cats

Smart, cute, agile and always ready to play, domestic cats are wondrous creatures.

Moggies is the British slang for cats who are Mutts or what we in America call the domestics.

The world of pure blooded animals has expanded exponentially during my lifetime.  When I was a child, there were a lot of cats and dogs around.  I don’t recall one of them that was considered a purebred animal. There were Thoroughbred and Saddle Bred Horses but cats and dogs were just cats and dogs.

As the German Shepherd dog, the Cocker Spaniel dog the Siamese Cat and the Persian Cat gained popularity so did the clubs and registries for cats and dogs. It became fashionable to have animals with proven backgrounds, bloodlines and of course, Pedigrees. The more champion ancestry in those Pedigrees the better…bragging rights, you know.

Inevitably the argument became which is better, the purebred animal or the Heinz 57 variety? Then as many ‘backyard breeders’ and puppy mills  proved greed, not love of the animals was their reason for  being in business, some things began to become clear.

The first thing lovers of dogs began to see was the harm being done to  Brachycephalic breeds like the Pekingese, the Pug and the English Bulldog. Cat lovers could see he same thing happening in the Persian breed. The problem was breeding for looks humans wanted in the dogs or cats with no thought at all to the health or well being of the animals. The result was dogs who cannot naturally deliver their young, cannot maintain their body temperature and are more susceptible to diseases and health problems that were rare or unknown in their ancestors.

Many dog and cat lovers came to be of the opinion it was better to have a Mutt than a purebred because of the health issue alone. Mutts were proving to be healthier and live longer than their purebred counterparts. You can find a Mutt with looks that mimic the best of the purebreds and they will usually carry the personality characteristics of the breed they look like. These reasons are why many people determined a Mutt was the best of both worlds.

This all culminated in Mutts being allowed as of last year into AKC agility, performance and rally competitions. They are not in the “beauty pageant” part of the dog show because that is a purebred dog competing against the ideal for his breed and of course, Mutts don’t have breed standards to compete against.

Now it looks as though cat lovers are finally looking for recognition of their Mutt Cats.  Moggies is the British slang for cats who are Mutts or what we in America call domestic cats. The most common breed of cat in the United States is the Domestic cat, either Shorthair or Longhair.  These are the cats you see at least one of in almost every American cat household and the cats you see numbers of around barns and farms.

From now on I think I will refer to the domestic cat as a Moggy. Perhaps giving them the name Moggies like Mutts was given to dogs will move the whole domestic cat group into a more recognized animal for our society. That might lead to the domestic cat being accepted as s part of American culture like the Mutt and that would make it harder to just kill them indiscriminately.

After all, that is what we are after, isn’t it?

Squeeeel!, Baby Leopards

Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported. From Wikimedia Commons Photo by Nancy Vandermey of EFBC"s Feline Conservation Center, Rosamond CA http://www.wildcatzoo.org

Big cats have very possibly the cutest babies of all in the animal kingdom. However, baby wolves, polar bears, all other bears, all other canines….Well, you get it. They are really all cute.

I don’t know, it is just something with the big cats that intrigues me and makes me squeeeel. The little guys in the video below aren’t doing anything but sleeping. They still turn me to mush. These baby leopards are completely huggable and kissable. They are almost too cute for humans to see.

Man, I know these are not pets and shouldn’t be, but I would really love to be around them anyway. Then again, wouldn’t everybody?

Here is the description from the video;

2-month-old clouded leopard cubs Taji and Sumalee take a nap after their morning feed. These cubs were born June 14, 2011 at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma, WA.

Here’s the video.

Now tell me you didn’t get a warm and fuzzy feeling watching these guys. The other great thing is they are increasing the number of this endangered species, so its a twofer.

Cat Survives Gas Chamber Twice

I'm not supposed to scratch or bite my boo-boo, but it really, really ITCHES!

Sometimes I feel sorry for myself.  Just now I was sad for me because my family is down with a terrible flu. We have been sick since my birthday which was New Years Day.

To make a long story short, I thought I deserved to feel sorry for myself……that is, until I read about a plucky little cat who refused to die when people tried to execute her in a gas chamber.

From MSNBC;

Officials at West Valley City’s animal shelter in Utah say the cat named Andrea hadn’t been adopted for 30 days when shelter officials tried to put her to death in October. She survived, so they gassed her again.

Shelter officials detected no vital signs and presumed she was dead after the second try, so they put her in a plastic bag in a cooler. But when they checked the bag, they saw she had vomited on herself and had hypothermia but was alive.

The shelter then decided to stop trying to kill her.

“It was just one of those things where they thought this cat obviously really wants to live,” West Valley City spokesman Aaron Crim told the Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/ylvSDw ). “Let’s give it a chance to find a permanent home.”

The newspaper reports the cat has since been adopted and shelter officials are investigating why the gassing failed.

I absolutely hate the idea that animals must go through so much just to prove they have a right to live. In my opinion, this cat should not have been put in the gas chamber the first time, let alone the second go round.  We simply must get to the place where no-kill shelters the rule rather than the exception in this country.

I know sometimes an animal is too sick or too hurt to save and I understand that. What I can’t understand is murdering cats, dogs and other animals just because we humans decide there are too many of them or some politician gets a bug up their big butt and decides to thin out the pet population.

Wouldn’t the money spent on murdering these innocent animals be better spent on an intelligent spay/neuter campaign and laws? If we significantly reduce the number of “unwanted” puppies, kittens and other pets, it will be a whole lot easier to find forever homes for the ones that are here. Then maybe we can junk the gas chamber thing altogether and  have only no kill shelters for the few animals that get lost or have other bad luck which puts them on the street.

I am smart enough to know that most people won’t be listening to what I have to say about this subject. That doesn’t mean I am going to shut up about it. It is the right thing to do and until my last breath I will be speaking out in favor of no kill animal shelters and rescues. I will speak for those who do not speak human.

Merry Christmas 2011!

I don't know, it just came and scooped me up. Really! Now, how do I get out?

I know Christmas isn’t until Sunday, but I saw these oh sooo cute!  videos and just had to bring them to fluffy feet readers a bit early.

You all know I can’t get enough of cute animal pictures and videos and a sweet girl I know in California named Kathleen who has a beautiful pet cat named Benna loves cute cat videos and pictures too.

This post is a Christmas treat as well as a shout out to Kathleen, Benna, Grant,Molly and all the other wonderful fluffy feet family members. I know there are lots of boys and girls out there who have cats, dogs or other pets they love.  This post is a shout out to all of them too.

I hope these videos are new to you. But if they are not, I’m sure you will be happy to see them again.

First up is a kitten who tries to catch the air coming out of a fan. She knows something is ruffling her hair but she isn’t sure what it is.  She knows it is coming out of that pesky fan though and she intends to catch it. When she gets older she will probably think the fan and the laser pointer are related because the prey coming from them always escapes.

Next we will see a shaded golden Persian kitten named Cricket who is just being a normal kitten and amusing herself. She is so cute and fluffy though that you just want to pick her up and hug her. I guarantee after watching this video, you will want a Cricket of your very own.

Let it be the Merriest Christmas Ever!

Check back after Christmas Day, there will be some great things coming! Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays.

Cat Plays Basketball ?

Hello, tennis ball.

I have lived with and just generally been around cats most of my life so I am not overly surprised to see them do something new. As a species, they have a way of coming up with the strangest and cutest games to amuse themselves and amaze us.

As an example, I shared my life with a cat named Tippy who was definitely not a lap cat. He paid no attention to the television in the house at all and usually just came in to eat and give his humans a perfunctory  ’hello.’ That is unless there was a baseball game on television.

For baseball, Tippy would sit right in front of the television and pay rapt attention as if he absolutely knew what was happening in the game. The only thing that would interrupt him was a person trying to move him or a commercial break. He would then wander the house until he heard the game come back on. Then he would rush to regain his spot for perfect viewing.

I never did figure out why Tippy loved baseball so much. I will say though he seemed most interested in the disappearing players when a long ball was hit and the camera would pan out to follow it. Really though, that was no reason for him to sit so attentively during the rest of the game.

Today, we have a video of a cat who is enthralled with her human playing basketball. Watch as he appears to be playing right along with the human player. It is really cute.

As I said before, cats are quite amazing. They have a way of surprising even those who have lived around them for what seems like forever.

As a bonus, here is a cat that manages to hide in a place most of us would never think to look.

Imagine just sitting there and up pops kitty!
