Cat Survives Gas Chamber Twice

I'm not supposed to scratch or bite my boo-boo, but it really, really ITCHES!

Sometimes I feel sorry for myself.  Just now I was sad for me because my family is down with a terrible flu. We have been sick since my birthday which was New Years Day.

To make a long story short, I thought I deserved to feel sorry for myself……that is, until I read about a plucky little cat who refused to die when people tried to execute her in a gas chamber.

From MSNBC;

Officials at West Valley City’s animal shelter in Utah say the cat named Andrea hadn’t been adopted for 30 days when shelter officials tried to put her to death in October. She survived, so they gassed her again.

Shelter officials detected no vital signs and presumed she was dead after the second try, so they put her in a plastic bag in a cooler. But when they checked the bag, they saw she had vomited on herself and had hypothermia but was alive.

The shelter then decided to stop trying to kill her.

“It was just one of those things where they thought this cat obviously really wants to live,” West Valley City spokesman Aaron Crim told the Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/ylvSDw ). “Let’s give it a chance to find a permanent home.”

The newspaper reports the cat has since been adopted and shelter officials are investigating why the gassing failed.

I absolutely hate the idea that animals must go through so much just to prove they have a right to live. In my opinion, this cat should not have been put in the gas chamber the first time, let alone the second go round.  We simply must get to the place where no-kill shelters the rule rather than the exception in this country.

I know sometimes an animal is too sick or too hurt to save and I understand that. What I can’t understand is murdering cats, dogs and other animals just because we humans decide there are too many of them or some politician gets a bug up their big butt and decides to thin out the pet population.

Wouldn’t the money spent on murdering these innocent animals be better spent on an intelligent spay/neuter campaign and laws? If we significantly reduce the number of “unwanted” puppies, kittens and other pets, it will be a whole lot easier to find forever homes for the ones that are here. Then maybe we can junk the gas chamber thing altogether and  have only no kill shelters for the few animals that get lost or have other bad luck which puts them on the street.

I am smart enough to know that most people won’t be listening to what I have to say about this subject. That doesn’t mean I am going to shut up about it. It is the right thing to do and until my last breath I will be speaking out in favor of no kill animal shelters and rescues. I will speak for those who do not speak human.

Dog Buried Alive is Rescued

The purest defination of love, a human and their dog.

All dogs deserve to be treated with kindness. There is no excuse for abuse and cruelty.

I have heard of and seen a lot of cruelty and abuse toward animals in my time here on Earth. But seldom have I seen a case of cruelty as bad as this one.

A hurt or disabled stray tan and white hound started hanging around a South African school. I suspect he was looking for food and just maybe a little comfort and companionship. No matter why he hung out there , was it reason enough to have the dog buried alive?

However, it seems the caretakers at the school  took offense at the stray dog’s barking and vowed to bury him alive on the school playing field as punishment. They did just that and they left the dog buried alive to suffocate underground.

But an anonymous call saved his life and rescuers managed to dig the animal out just in time. I’m happy it isn’t every day they have to rush to dig out a dog buried alive.

From Daily Mail UK;

Animal welfare boss Christina Pretorius said the dog was saved by a local vet and his assistant who received an anonymous tip-off about its live burial at 8.30am yesterday.

She said: ‘They rushed to the school and apprehended two caretakers on the school field. The men initially claimed the dog was dead, but on further questioning admitted the animal was still alive when they buried it.

‘They said one of the school’s senior supervisors had told them to get rid of the dog as it was being a nuisance by hanging around the classrooms.’ The dog was discovered at the bottom of a pit which had been dug five foot deep.

It was rescued by officials and taken to a local veterinarian practice for an examination.

Experts said the animal was disabled, although it is believed that it could have been injured during a previous road traffic accident.

Follow the link to see pictures of the dog who has now been named Warrior. The name seems fitting to me. I cannot imagine what these men were thinking. Even though their supervisor supposedly told them to do this act of cruelty, they should have known it was wrong on its face and also against the law.

Whatever the reasoning, this is cruelty at its worst and these two men along with their supervisor deserve punishment.  It was just luck that the dog was rescued in time to keep him alive.

At this point we can only hope for the adoption of Warrior into a loving forever home.  We also hope he recovers from his injuries.

Thanks to the rescuers who worked to get Warrior out of his premature grave and special thanks to the anonymous person who called in the alert so he could be rescued.

ASPCA Helps in Puppy Mill Raid

I think I deserve better than a puppy mill, don't I?

On October 6th in Rowan County, Kentucky a puppy mill was raided.  The ASPCA was there to assist in the rescue of one hundred eighteen small breed dogs from the atrocious conditions in which they were being housed.

Among the small breed dogs were Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Papillons, Min Pins and Poodles.  Some of the animals were pregnant while others were only weeks old. A puppy mill is no where for these dogs to live. Especially if we expect to see them thrive.

From the ASPCA;

An ASPCA emergency sheltering team and other veterinary experts are helping care for and assess the dogs at the Rowan County Animal Shelter. At the same time, the team is working to place the roughly 30 animals who were already in the shelter. ASPCA responders are also completing thorough evaluations of the rescued animals and helping local authorities collect evidence to support criminal charges, which the Rowan county attorney told media he hoped would be filed this week.

The dogs were discovered after the Rowan County Attorney’s Office received complaints about the facility.

This case is the latest to highlight the urgent need to bring an end to puppy mills. The ASPCA has rescued hundreds of puppy mill dogs and aided in the prosecution of their owners. We’ve also been active in drafting and promoting legislation that would improve the lives of puppy mill dogs, most recently in Texas and Pennsylvania.

If you would like to learn more about how you can help in the fight against puppy mills and their horrible treatment of dogs go to www.nopetstorepuppies.com.

I know it sometimes seems the fight against abuse, cruelty and neglect of animals and pets seems like a never ending battle.  But it is one that is worth fighting.

Remember we fight for those who cannot speak, at least in human.

Thank you for all you do for animals and the environment.

Dog Abuser Gets Misdeameanor

This is what Courage should look like. How could a person do any harm to a beautiful dog like this?

Cases of animal abuse and animal cruelty are all too frequent.  Many animal activists have been working diligently to get laws passed to make animal abuse or cruelty a felony rather than a misdemeanor and many areas have passed laws to stiffen the punishment for this kind of crime.

However, if cases of severe animal abuse and cruelty are going to be plea bargained down to a misdemeanor by prosecutors the animals still do not receive the justice they deserve.

In California, a woman named  Kimberly Nizato was sentenced to 30 days in jail and ordered to pay restitution for her crime of sever animal cruelty.  For what this woman did, this is absolutely a slap on the wrist.

It is very hard to write, talk or think about this kind of horrific treatment to a dog.  Because this particular dog happens to be one of a breed I love so much and have had such close bonds with, it is even more difficult.  Please don’t get me wrong, starving any dog almost to death is very, very horrific and any dog abuser should get the maximum  punishment.  It is just when I look at the pictures of the German Shepherd the rescue workers named Courage, I see dogs that are now gone  who were named Baron, Babe and Rex.  Thank God they never were under the care of a dog abuser.

These few words from the story of this remarkable dog will bring tears to your eyes even if you don’t particularly favor dogs as your pet of choice. ‘ ‘The dog ate dirt and rocks to survive.’  And this particular dog abuser was an assistant at a Vet hospital.

From The Orange County Register;

Nizato was a full-time kennel assistant at an Irvine veterinary hospital when she, with help from her sister, surrendered her severely emaciated dog to an acquaintance last spring. Her 3-year-old German shepherd, known as Courage, weighed 37 pounds, and veterinarians said he had eaten dirt and rocks to survive.

Nizato was arrested April 16, 2010. She pleaded no contest to felony animal cruelty June 28.

German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County agreed to pay for the dog’s care and renamed him Courage. After weeks of round-the-clock care and constant feedings, the dog made a full recovery and now lives with Lisa Whiseant, the woman who took the dog to medical care last spring.

Whiseant, a Huntington Beach resident, submitted an impact statement to the court, which was read into evidence by Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Bainbridge.

“Courage has moved on. He is a healthy, joyous, 92-pound dog that spends his days playing with toys, his shepherd gal pal, and his wading pool. He harbors no ill effects and is now in perfect health,” Whiseant wrote. “His temperament is loving and forgiving.”

This is one of the saddest things I have ever seen. It is just absolutely amazing this German Shepherd Dog survived. Courage is certainly a proper name for him. Like most dogs of the German Shepherd breed, he possesses an abundance of that quality.

This woman’s attorney said in his plea to the court that this was a crime of omission not commission.

I am going to say something really nasty here.  In looking at this article and the picture of this abused dog along side that of the human who was supposed to love and care for him, it doesn’t seem that this woman omitted anything when it came to feeding herself.  But she couldn’t give even a scrap to the dog?  I say save the state some money and neglect feeding this person for the thirty days she spends in jail.

Please remember that a person who would treat an animal with cruelty and abuse is very likely to treat children or other humans in the same way.  A dog abuser has no heart and no empathy. In fact, it would be easy to question if they even have a soul.

Bear Bile Farms Animal Cruelty

Eurasian Brown Bear Photo from Wikimedia Creative Commons.

We are often told animals act only on instinct but have no real understanding of what they are doing.  To those people who maintain animals don’t feel love, hate, fear, happiness, despair or any emotion whatsoever, I say bull puckey. They don’t have any idea what they are talking about.

I have personally witnessed animals experience deep and obvious emotional moments. I have seen animals grieve for a lost companion or baby, show unfettered joy at a reunion with an old friend, show embarrassment and absolutely exhibit love and loyalty.

Because pets or animals in general do not speak our language, the tendency is to ignore what they do say to us in their own language.  The tendency is to overlook the fact that we are the ignorant ones in the conversation.

Look no further than the story of a female bear subjected to both cruelty and abuse at a bile farm in China.  If this bear doesn’t convince you animals feel deep emotions or at least soften your heart then you have no feelings or heart of your own.

FACT:  Of  the thousands of bear bile products seized by authorities every year, approximately 98 percent come from China, but the practice is commonplace in other nations too, like Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Japan.

First, you must understand what a bile farm is.  It is a place where bears are kept in cages so small that as they grow larger they are literally crushed.  A hole is drilled in the bears abdomen and a permanent tube is inserted into their gallbladder so bile will drain out.

FACT:  The International Union for the Conservation of Nature estimates approximately 14,000 Asiatic, Brown and Sun bears across south Asia suffer this type of treatment, accounting for about half of the species’ population in the region.

The reason for this cruelty is Traditional Chinese Medicine which says bear bile has curative powers.  It doesn’t seem to bother the people who practice this form of medicine that tremendous abuse is done to innocent and intelligent fellow beings.

Bears are known to beat their heads on the sides of their cages and to hit themselves repeatedly in the chest, but the “farmers” put it off to the “crazy” bears trying to kill themselves.  Funny how no one mentions the bear might also be in great pain from the bile draining through the tube inserted into their gall bladders.

FACT:  The Sun Bear or Malayan Bear is sometimes called the Honey Bear.  This bear is listed as threatened on the endangered species list.

The female bear we are talking about today heard her cub cry out in pain.  In a rage, she broke out of her cage, ran to he cub and smothered him to death then ran full speed into a wall killing herself.

This is a pure case of an emotional mother bear making a decision she was not going to let her cub suffer the pain and indignity she had gone through in life. Any human mother who does not understand this bear’s actions isn’t much of a mother in my view and should read the true Jewish story of  Masada and what those mothers and fathers did when faced with no way out.

Sun Bear or Malayan Bear also called the Honey Bear from Wikimedia Commons

FACT:  The recent decline in the sun bear population can be largely attributed to the hunting of “nuisance bears” that destroy crops and widespread poaching driven by the market for their fur and for their bile, which is used in Chinese medicine.
