Good Neighbors Save Maltese

Sophie is a Maltese.  They are small white bundles of energy covered in dog hair.  It is safe to say that no member of the Maltese breed would present much of a problem for a Pit Bull if push came to shove.

Recently Sophie met up with a Pit Bull while she was out for a walk with her human, Nicole Bromma.  From the accounts, Sophie didn’t bring on what happened to her in that she was not challenging or acting aggressively toward the bigger dog. Nevertheless, Sophie found herself in the jaws of the Pit Bull.  She was being held by the throat and being shaken like a rag doll.

Sophie heard a lot of noise and there was a lot of blood.  I am sure the small dog was absolutely terrified because she had to know that short of a miracle there was no way out of the death grip she was in.  All she could do was try to break free and she was trying with all her might….then her miracle happened.

From the San Francisco Chronicle;

“She looked like a rag in her mouth,” Bromma said. “From the moment it grabbed her, I thought she was dead.”

Bromma was screaming at the top of her lungs. We often hear about terrible things happening on the street and bystanders doing nothing.

So it wouldn’t have been a huge surprise if nothing had happened. Sophie looked like a goner, the street was full of people heading to work, and Bromma felt helpless.

That’s when we get to the good part.

As it happens, two doors down from where Sophie was grabbed stands the San Francisco Pet Hospital, the oldest pet medical center in San Francisco, established in 1908. Standing behind the counter was veterinary technician Gabriel Johnson.

“I heard screaming, and I jumped over the counter,” Johnson said. “I came out the door and saw a dog fight.”

Johnson tried prying Coco’s jaws apart, but he couldn’t do it alone.

Sophie’s story is one of not giving up.  It is also a good object lesson for all of us humans.  Even when the odds look long, if we band together to stop something bad from happening, we usually accomplish our goal.
There are many very good and caring people in this world and I prefer to think they far out number the other types.  But sometimes when I read the newspaper or watch the news, it seems everything that happens is bad.  From now on, when I start to feel there isn’t a reason to fight anymore, I will think about Sophie and particularly about the caring good Samaritans who banded together to save her.
I hope these people realize that good deeds done are like ripples on a pond.  More good will come from them.
As for Sophie, somehow, I think she will go on to live a very long and productive doggie life.  I’m glad she had the opportunity to do so.  She will most likely never forget the cruelty of the attack upon her, but animals have a wonderful way of pressing on after an event like this.  I am sure she will be just fine.
