Add Your Name to a Kite

April 25, 2010 by: fluffyfeet

This is an absolutely wonderful thing.  It comes from our friends at the Alaska Wilderness League.  I must say they have outdone themselves with a novel way to bring attention to the Arctic National Refuge and our fight to keep it safe.

Birds from the Arctic National Refuge migrate to all fifty states.  So, get this, Alaska Wilderness League is going to fly kites in the shape of migrating birds over DC for all fifty states.  The kites will be in the shape of an Arctic Refuge  bird that migrates to each of the individual states.  So each state kite will be unique.  But each kite will be made even more unique and here is how.

Each kite will be printed full of names of people from the state the kite represents who support keeping the Arctic National Refuge safe.  My name is already submitted to be on the Nevada kite.  Won’t you join me in letting  elected officials know there are a lot of people who support the Alaska National Refuge?

Now here is here is the really cool part.  The kites will also ‘migrate’ to fly over the official hearings in Alaska.  Here is what the Alaska Wilderness League says about this event;

On May 4, Alaska Wilderness League will take to the skies of Washington, D.C. with 50 kites in the shape of Arctic migratory birds. It will be a massive display of nationwide support for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

It’s easy for you to participate in this Arctic kite ‘migration’ – just tell us that you support the effort, and we’ll print your name on the Arctic kite for your state (birds that begin their lives in the Arctic Refuge journey to all 50 states!). Your kite will fly over the Capitol building for all lawmakers to see before ‘migrating’ to Alaska to welcome visitors to official hearings on the future of the Arctic Refuge.

To get you name on your state kite go here.

Lets let the world know that we want to keep the Alaska Wildlife Refuge as the sanctuary it is and not as another ruined field full of oil rigs.  The birds and other animals there should be protected from any further infringement on their homes.  Our environment is too important.  Lets quit gambling with it and with the lives of the creatures who live in it.
