NM Dog Checks Self into Hospital

A  German Shepherd mix dog in Farmington, New Mexico limped into the emergency room of the local hospital.

The emergency room doors slid open and in limped the dog.  He had blood on his nose and paw.  He also had a puncture hole in one leg that Animal Control thinks was the result of a bite from another dog.

According to The Daily Times Newspaper, Animal Control officer Robin Loev responded to a call from the San Juan Regional Medical Centre emergency room where the dog was waiting.  The officer said the dog appeared to be intelligent and calm.  The pooch was taken to the Farmington Animal Shelter and later claimed by its owner.

This is not the first time I have heard of this type of thing happening.  I even heard about a dog that managed to get to his vets office after he was struck by a car in his neighborhood.  Apparently the dog had paid attention when his owner took him to the vet.  All that time the owner just thought the dog was simply hanging his head out the window and had no idea the dog was memorizing the way to the vet. :)

Dogs are really smart and they know where to go if they are hurt just like they know where to go if they are hungry. The German Shepherd is one of the most intelligent of all dogs and this mix sure seems to have inherited the smarts of the breed.

When one really thinks about it, this breed saves us all the time.  As Police Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs, Military Dogs and as companion animals, both German Shepherd Dogs and mixes of the breed have worked for and saved humans for a very long time.

In my book they can be treated at the hospital in my town anytime they need to be.
