Perhaps you have heard about the huge storm that is hitting the west Coast of the United States. It is bringing a lot of rain to the coast and lots of snow to the mountains as it moves inland. After it crosses the California mountain ranges, it aims directly for all of us here in Nevada.
We are in a small, rural mountain town in Nevada and we are prepared for a lot of snow and ice from this storm. We are also prepared for power outages.
One of the problems with living in a very rural, rugged area is loss of services during bad storms. Our power company works very hard to keep us connected, but we still manage to lose power during major storms, especially when they come with strong winds like this one.
I’m sure you are wondering why I am telling you all of this. Well, it is simply because I want readers of this site to know why I might miss a day of posting here or there this week. I can’t have my computers on when we are experiencing heavy power surges from the winds because I don’t want to burn them up. But during the calm between fronts, I promise I will be posting to keep readers up to date on what is going on in the animal world.
In the meantime, please take your pets inside and offer shelter and sustenance to any critter you can. Throw some seeds and crumbs out on the snow for the birds that are still around. If you know where there are feral cats or dogs, drop off some food to the kind people that make sure to care for them. Make sure your horses are safely stalled and fed and that the barn is warm.
Right now it is cold, it is blowing and when I look out my window, the landscape looks like we are floating in the clouds because of the fog and sleet. I think I’ll make some hot chocolate while the power is back on. Sound good? Come on over, I’ll make a cup for you too. Wait, only come if you have a way to safely get here over very icy streets. Hot chocolate, even made from scratch is not worth an accident.
