By now, everyone has heard about the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The nations of the world are sending relief and supplies to the victims. The United States is sending the military, hospital ships and massive amounts of relief supplies. Charities are collecting donations on an unprecedented scale. It is all needed and it will all be used. Surely the people of Haiti need all the help that can be mustered at this time and we all should do everything in our power to help.
I have been wondering when animal groups would be going to Haiti. As we learned with other disasters, animals need help too.
Many poor nations rely on animals not only as companions, but often as part of their very livelihood, and of course, there are always pets and other companion animals. When a disaster occurs these cats, dogs and other animals are often lost or injured and are in need of assistance. I’m sure you all remember the stories about the animals in the aftermath of Katrina.
Fortunately, there are groups that go to these places and help in the recovery effort by helping the animals. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) are two such groups. Among all the other great work they do on behalf of our animal friends, they both answer the call after a disaster.
Today I am posting a bulletin from IFAW that contains a request for donations. I do not usually put up donation requests, but I think we can all agree, this one is not your normal run of the mill situation.
