Here we go again. The environment of endandered Stellar Sea Lions and various whales in the Bering Straight is being threatened. This time it is by massive commercial fishing boats that are sucking up their essential food supply which is a small fish called the Pollack. They then sell these fish to fast food chains like McDonalds and Burger King for fish sandwiches. So every time we eat fast food fish we are taking the food from the mouths of an endangered species. Just great, isn’t it?
It seems to me they could hit a happy medium by taking fewer fish and thus allowing both humans and sea life to have their happy meals. Yes, I realize this would probably raise the price of fast food fish sandwiches. But I know I would pay a little more just to know I am not killing an endangered sea lion with my appetites.
Actually, deep fried fish cakes slathered in sauce and cheese then put on a bun are probably not the healthiest thing to eat anyway, so I think that I will give them up completely. I have enough to eat without exterminating another animal group.
From Care 2 Petition site:
Greenpeace has been warning for years that the commercial fishing industry would destroy this fragile ocean environment. Now – with the pollock population reduced to the smallest on record – it’s more urgent than ever to establish a global network of marine reserves, where fishing practices and other extractive industries would be prohibited and 40 percent of our open seas would be protected.
The world’s oceans will soon be unrecognizable if we fail to act in 2010. Just as the creation of America’s national parks system was a revolutionary idea, we must – as a nation and a planet – act swiftly to set aside protected marine reserves and defy conventional practices. Without a global network of marine reserves, we will lose the tufted puffin, the endangered Steller sea lion, the humpback whale and countless other animals like them.
They are asking for donations to Greenpeace to help with their efforts to stop over fishing the ocean and to set aside protected marine reserves. I do not post pleas for donations. However, I think this is a real problem and Greenpeace doesn’t take corporate or government money, so I will post the link.
Go here if you wish to donate.
Thank you all for all that you do.
