Swine Flu and Your Pets

another maine coon kittenBy now most of you have probably heard or read about the thirteen year old cat in Iowa that has the Swine Flu.  It seems as though the cat got the disease from her family.

I looked and found an article that will answer the questions that as a pet owner you will have.  By the way, the cat has recovered and it isn’t all as bad as it sounds.  So take a little time and read the update on Swine Flu and your pets that comes from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.  It will make you a more informed pet owner and will help to set your fears to rest.  I know that no matter what kind of animals we live with, we all want them to be well and happy.

The Iowa Department of Public Health has reported that a cat became ill with H1N1 virus after three members of the family became ill with influenza-like symptoms.

On Wednesday November 4, U.S. officials confirmed that a 13-year-old cat was infected with swine flu. The domestic shorthair was treated at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine and has recovered. Read full report.

It’s important to remember to protect family pets from the illness. People who are sick with H1N1 can spread the virus to humans and to some animals. But there is no evidence that animals can infect humans with the H1N1 virus.
