Wild Horses Need More Help

September 17, 2009 by: fluffyfeet

wild horsesI know I am probably driving you to distraction with posts about signing petitions or writing letters about various groups of animals that need help.  I really wish the need was not there.  But, the fact is that lots of species are in trouble.  A lot of it is caused by our own ignorance and a lot is caused unfortunately,  by government bureaucrats that will not listen or respond.  I look forward to the day when we no longer have to fight to keep animals from being exploited and killed.

Following is another petition to help save wild horses and burros.  They still need help and we need to rescue them before it is too late.

Here’s how our government “manages” wild horses: When the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) decides there are too many horses on our public lands, BLM rounds them up and keeps them in holding pens to adopt them out. But there aren’t enough people to adopt all these horses, so last summer, BLM announced plans to kill 30,000 healthy wild horses rather than pay to care for them.Tell Congress to protect our wild horses!

The House of Representatives recently passed the Restore Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act, legislation to expand America’s wild horses’ range to save these majestic animals from slaughter. Now your senators need to know that you expect them to do the same.

The ROAM Act will step up fertility control measures, encourage more horse adoptions and provides as much as 19 million additional acres for these wild animals to roam. Tell your Senators to co-sponsor the ROAM Act today! »

There was a lot of negative hype on the ROAM act when it first passed the house. Many people did not read before they spoke. I would like to clarify one point in particular. The act requires the BLM to provide 19 million additional acres of land for wild horses. Dollar signs might appear in your eyes at this news. The fact is that the BLM already owns the acreage. It was part of the original 1971 “Wild Horse Annie Act” . Over the years , 19 million acres of public lands have been taken away from the wild horses. The ROAM act simply requires that it be be returned.

If you have any reservation about the ROAM act, investigate before you say nay. Then contact your senators and ask that they vote YEA on this pivotal act to Restore Our American Mustang.

Thank you for commenting on fluffyfeet. I try to post any petition or news that I receive about wild horses. I live in the middle of Nevada and have had the pleasure of seeing these beautiful animals run free. Sadly, even in the few years I have lived here, their numbers have seemed to diminish. Or I have not been lucky enough to run across them.
I will do anything that I can to help these horses get the room they need. After all, it isn’t as though the BLM doesn’t have enough land out here for them.
Thank you for your informed and helpful input and I look forward to hearing more from you. Anything you can tell us about these horses will be appreciated.
