The Barbet is an ancient French Water Dog and sailors companion. It is also quite rare with only about 100 known in the United States.
It is said this dog is the basis for other water dogs such as the American Water Spaniel and the Portuguese Water Dog. Its name comes from the French word barbe, meaning beard. One look at this dog tells you why the name applies. The Barbet has a long coat that is wavy and sometimes curly. Their slightly rounded head is covered in wavy hair and a shaggy beard. But their medium length muzzle and round nose usually peek out.
Grooming this breed means brushing daily and bathing occasionally. The coat needs attention to prevent matting. If this dog is outdoors a lot it may be better to keep them clipped to prevent debris from tangling in their curls.
The Barbet is medium sized and can live as long as fifteen years. They are very healthy with relatively few genetic health problems.
Although the Barbet enjoys the company of their family they are best suited to a home with a large fenced yard in which they can play and run. However, they can handle close quarters if they are given lots of exercise. Good owners for this dog would be active singles, hunters and sportsmen or anyone who lives near water. If you are interested in dog agility, this is the perfect breed for it.
The Barbet absolutely loves water. They are playful, energetic, smart, obedient and carefree.
No one knows for sure but the Barbet may have descended from Briards, Poodles and ancient Asian and North African Herding Dogs.
If you have a very active lifestyle, like to run or take long walks or spend a lot of time in, on or near the water, this dog might just be what you have been looking for.
