Portuguese Water Dog

pwdWe have a new dog at the White House!!  Things are always better with a dog around and I am sure the new First Family dog which they named Bo will bring the Obama family a lot of pleasure.

Bo is a Portuguese Water Dog.  This is a fairly rare water spaniel breed of gun dog.  They have either tightly curled or wavy waterproof coats.  They have webbed toes for swimming and they are most closely related to the Standard Poodle but more robust  with stout legs and and their tail is not docked.

The Portie as it is known by admirers has a single layered coat that grows indefinitely.  They must be trimmed about every two months to prevent their hair from growing long enough to interfere with their sight and to prevent matting  that can cause skin problems.

This is an athletic, active breed.  In Portugal they were taught to herd fish into the fisherman’s nets and to retrieve lost tackle and dropped nets.  It is said they can swim all day which may be why they were also used as couriers from ship to ship and from ship to shore.

Porties are medium sized with males standing 20 to 23 inches tall and weighing 40 to 60 pounds.  Females are 17 to 21 inches tall and weigh 35 to 50 pounds.  The breed is considered hypoallergenic which is very good because Malia Obama is allergic.

Being highly intelligent as well as active and athletic seems as though it will fit right in with the Obama family.  I am sure they will return in kind all the love and loyalty that little Bo will give them.

Now that there is a dog in the White House I must say it really feels as though things are looking up.
