Washington is the only state in the union named after a President of the United States. It is nicknamed The Evergreen State and that seems fitting. The forests of the Olympic Peninsula are among the rainiest places in the world and are the only rain forests located in the continental United States.
Washington has been known in recent history for the Silicon Valley and the tech companies that reside in the state. Microsoft is located in Redmond and its founder, Bill Gates lives in Medina. Amazon.com, Classmates.com and Whitepages.com are also located in this state. To make sure they stay awake to do their work, Starbucks was founded in Seattle and became the biggest coffee chain in the world.
In 2004, Washington ranked first in the nation in the production of raspberries, hops, apples, sweet cherries, pears, Concord grapes and Niagara grapes.
But in 1980 neither the tech industry nor food production were the focus of attention in Washington. That was the year when the northeast face of Mount St Helens exploded outward destroying a large part of the top of the volcano. It seems like everything in this state happens in a big way. But I think we all could have done without that one. Let us hope that was the last volcanic activity for quite a while.
Food production means farms and farms mean pets. We also know that all those computer geeks need company that won’t interrupt them as they sit pounding their keyboards and coming up with the latest programs to astound the rest of us. So come on all you people of Washington, get out to your shelters and rescues and save some deserving pets. You need them and they for sure need you.
