Virginia was number ten of the original thirteen colonies. Arlington County was part of a ten mile square of land surveyed in 1791 to be part of Washington DC. The United States Congress gave it back after a referendum among the citizens.
Eight United States Presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Woodrow Wilson were born in Virginia. Six Presidents’ wives were also born in Virginia. They were Martha Washington, Martha Jefferson, Rachel Jackson, Letitia Tyler, Ellen Arthur and Edith Wilson. In addition, seven Presidents are buried in the state. They are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Tyler, William H. Taft and John F. Kennedy.
Virginia was also the site of over 2,200 of the 4,000 battles fought in the United States Civil War. The state is also home to beautiful mountains and beaches. Quite a lot going on for one state.
With all of this history and beautiful scenery surrounding them, Virginians need to get out and see it. What better way to enjoy those mountain trails than with a faithful pet? If possible please try to adopt a companion animal from a local rescue or shelter. Everyone will benefit from your kindness and generosity including you.
