As the United States Civil War approached Tennessee was the last state to secede from the Union. At the wars conclusion Tennessee was the first state to be readmitted. Its name is derived from the Cherokee village of Tanasie which has several definitions; ‘lost’, ‘river with a big bend’ and ‘gathering place’.
Davy Crockett was born in Tennessee, but not on a mountaintop as it says in the song. He was born on the banks of Limestone Creek near Greenville. Both Al Gore and Aretha Franklin also come from this state. Another native son is the zoologist Jack Hanna. From this I gather that Tennessee is very committed to the environment and animal life. Plus their commitment comes from the soul.
America’s most visited national park is The Great Smoky Mountains National Park which straddles the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. Over 1,500 Black Bears live in the park making a bear population density of 2 per every square mile. The Black Bear can run 30 miles per hour and has color vision. They also have a keen sense of smell and are excellent tree climbers. Many visitors come to the park just to see these magnificent bears in their natural habitat.
It seems obvious the people of Tennessee re close to the land and when you are close to nature you are close to animals. It would be nice if the Tarheel State residents would make it a priority to visit their local animal shelters and adopt one of the many pets waiting there. Then, who knows what adventures will lie in the future for you and your pets?
