South Dakota brings to mind American Indians, The Black Hills, Gold, miles of beautiful country and a rich history of the old west. All these things are there and true, but the one thing that means South Dakota in many minds is Mount Rushmore.
The sculptor Gutzon Borglum began drilling on Mount Rushmore National Monument in 1927. Towering over 1600 feet the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are scaled to a man who would stand 465 feet tall. It took 14 years and one million dollars to create Mt. Rushmore. Now it is considered priceless.
There is another mountain being carved in South Dakota. Crazy Horse mountain carving is now in progress . Carved in the round it will be the world’s largest sculpture at 563 feet high and 641 feet long . The sculpture depicts the Great Chief Crazy Horse with his hair flying mounted on a beautiful running horse. When the project is complete it will serve as a focal point of education and culture as well as a memorial to and for the North American Indian.
The American Indian knew and still knows how to live in harmony with the land and the creatures that inhabit it. We could all learn a thing or ten from their example.
Maybe a first step in coming to grips with Mother Nature would be to stop killing her creations just because they don’t have a human ‘owner’. Perhaps the citizens of South Dakota can show us the way by making an effort to adopt pets and give them the home they really deserve.
