Rhode Island is the smallest state in size in the United States with 1,214 square miles. It was also the last of the original 13 colonies to become a state. Its official state name is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
Rhode Island never ratified, in fact, rejected the 18th Amendment known as Prohibition. White Horse Tavern was built in 1673 and is the oldest operating tavern in the United States. It is located in Rhode Island. I don’t think rejecting Prohibition and being home to White Horse Tavern are connected. I just think it is rather funny.
This state is also home to the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the country; St. Marys built in 1828. Another house of worship Touro Synagogue built in 1763 is the oldest synagogue in North America and home to the oldest Torah in North America. I find this rather ironic, kind of a battle of the bands type thing.
The Rhode Island motto is Hope. That’s it . One word says it all. I am sure there are many good pets in shelters who are waiting for adoption in this state. Hope is what they live on. Please make adoption of one of these animals a priority. They need you and you may not realize it but you need them too.
