Pit Bull Hero Saves Human

The Pit Bull dog breed suffers from a bad reputation.  Some of this reputation was earned and much was not earned. In fact, it is easier to find a Pit Bull hero than it is to find a Pit Bull villain. In both war and peace, Pit Bull hero dogs have  steadfastly gone about the dog duty of minding over humans and making sure we don’t get into too much trouble.

From Petside;

Maryland has recently deemed that pit bulls are inherently dangerous dogs. Yet, for those who own them, these dogs are far from dangerous; rather, they are intensely loyal and loving creatures. Proof of this can be found in the form of a Massachusetts woman who is alive today solely because of her pit bull.

According to a report by KSDK, a woman was rescued from certain death after falling unconscious on a set of railroad tracks thanks to her pit bull, who sacrificed her body to save her owner. With a freight train bearing down on her owner, the pit bull, an eight-year-old named Lilly, either tried to push or pull her out of the train’s path. With time running out, the dog then moved between the train and her owner to spare her owner the brunt of the train hit. She wound up bearing the entirety of the hit from the oncoming train, and suffered severe trauma, including a sliced foot and a fractured pelvis along with other injuries.

At one time the American Staffordshire Bull Terrier (the Pit Bulls foundation dog breed) was the favored dog in this country.  The breed was America’s babysitter and parents  routinely trusted their children to the care of the family dog. Even Petey who was the dog made famous by ‘The Little  Rascals’ films was one of this breed.

These animals were quite simply the pet to have back in the day and families loved their dogs as part of their families just as they do today. This leads me to question the people who decide an entire breed of dogs is to be outlawed because the actions of a few over-bred and badly abused dogs made bloody headlines.

I am not saying the dogs who badly injure or kill people shouldn’t be judged.  I am saying each dog has to be looked at as the individual they are and judged accordingly. Because a dog looks like another breed is insufficient reason to remove them from their homes and deprive them of the love of their families.

Let’s put an end to breed discrimination and get rid of archaic breed specific laws. Let’s allow more Pit Bull hero dogs to live and be happy in our homes and neighborhoods.

Baboons Are Reading

baboon - animal behavior and intelligence

A troop of baboons. Are these animals close to the way humans started? These animals are intelligent, familial and have a definite society. They are better than some of our human relatives.

Are baboons reading? Not quite yet but they are on their way.

Researchers at Aix-Marseille University Of France are testing baboons in the recognition of four letter words. The baboons sit at a computer as it displays four letter combinations. The baboons then must determine if the letters are a random combination or if they are a real word. The results are surprising.

Though the baboons have no idea what the words mean they recognized the real words from the jumbled letters about 80% percent of the time. That is equal to the score on the same test given to human teens who have used these words their entire lives. It is quite possible we are seeing how our own ancestors first learned to read and write.

From AP:

The key is that these animals not only learned by trial and error which letter combinations were correct, but they also noticed which letters tend to go together to form real words, such as SH but not FX, said Grainger. So even when new words were sprung on them, they did a better job at figuring out which were real.

Grainger said a pre-existing capacity in the brain may allow them to recognize patterns and objects, and perhaps that’s how we humans also first learn to read.

The study’s results were called “extraordinarily exciting” by another language researcher, psychology professor Stanislas Dehaene at the College of France, who wasn’t part of this study. He said Grainger’s finding makes sense. Dehaene’s earlier work says a distinct part of the brain visually recognizes the forms of words. The new work indicates this is also likely in a non-human primate.

We have seen other animals learn not only words but their meaning as well. Gorillas have learned to speak in sign language with humans. That has been going on for decades.

Now thanks to IPads and  tablets more and more animals are not only communicating with mankind but with each other.  Recently we wrote about how gorillas, orangutans, dolphins and even the domestic feline are learning to use our language and technology to communicate with us.

I feel we are on the verge of true communication with many animal species. We are just now taking the first steps and who knows what breakthroughs are on the horizon. It is now obvious that intelligence is not reserved to Homo Sapiens.

One thing is for sure, every single person will have to rethink the attitude of “it’s just a dumb animal”.

6 Month Old Great Dane Puppy

Big dogs enjoy naps too.

This Great Dane dog seems to be enjoying his rest. I do wonder how comfortable his human is though.

No matter the breed of dog, puppies are cute.  They have a way of immediately grabbing our hearts and not letting go. Toy breeds are one thing but the giant breeds present their own set of challenges.

Even with the challenges and problems of raising and training your puppy the result is worth it. You will end up with an animal companion who trusts you completely.  A pet you can rely upon no matter the circumstances.

However, until you get the puppy grown into an adult dog, you will find your days and evenings filled with laughs and cuteness.  Watch the video below of a 6 month old Great Dane puppy named Fern as she wakes up and tries to get her long legs to navigate a polished wood floor. It seems Fern isn’t too fond of the hardwood floors her humans put into the house. I think she would like to go back to carpet. This Great Dane puppy is making feelings known as far as flooring is concerned.

All of the larger breeds of dogs have a period of time when they are growing where their legs seem to be foreign objects to them. Getting these strange stick like things to coordinate is a real problem for the puppies during this period. They are kind of like human boys in their early teens. My father referred to it as a gawky stage. That description works for me where these big dogs are concerned.
